Moshi is one of East Africa’s most underrated towns. Sitting at 900 metres above sea level at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, it is warmer and greener than Arusha, more relaxed and less touristy than many comparable regional centres, and surrounded by an extraordinary range of day trips, cultural experiences, and natural attractions that most visitors rushing to Kilimanjaro or a safari never discover.
This 3-day Moshi itinerary is designed for travellers arriving a few days before a Kilimanjaro climb — it provides gentle acclimatisation at Moshi’s altitude, introduces you to the region’s culture and landscapes, and ensures you arrive at the Kilimanjaro gate rested, fed, and genuinely excited rather than jet-lagged and underprepared. It also works perfectly for any traveller in Moshi without a climb on the agenda.
| 3 days in Moshi — overview |

| Day 2: Materuni Waterfalls and Chagga coffee tour — the best full-day trip from Moshi |
| Day 3: Chemka Hot Springs recovery day, gear check, Kilimanjaro eve preparation |
| Best hotels: Keys Hotel, Aishi Machame Hotel, Springlands Hotel (mid-range) |
| Getting there: 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) |
Day 1: arrive in Moshi — orientation and settling in
Morning: arrival and hotel check-in
Most travellers arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to Moshi in approximately 45–50 minutes. Serac Adventure includes airport pickup in all Kilimanjaro and safari packages — arrange your transfer in advance rather than negotiating with airport taxis.
Check into your hotel and give yourself the first morning to settle in. Do not try to pack too much into your arrival day, particularly if you have come from a long-haul flight. Rest is acclimatisation — at 900 metres, Moshi is not at altitude itself, but the rest and hydration on Day 1 significantly affect how you feel on Day 2 and beyond.
Afternoon: Moshi town exploration
Moshi is compact and navigable on foot. A 2–3 hour afternoon walk covers the main points of interest:
- Moshi clock tower: the town’s central landmark and the best orientation point from which to navigate.
- Central market: a covered market selling fresh produce, spices, local crafts, and everyday goods. The most authentic introduction to everyday Moshi life.
- Main street: Lined with gear shops, restaurants, banks, and pharmacies. Good for last-minute supplies, SIM card purchase, and general orientation.
- Gear shops: Stock up on any missing items — Moshi has excellent gear rental and purchase options. The main strip near the clock tower has multiple shops with trekking equipment.
Evening: first local dinner
Moshi’s restaurant scene is better than most visitors expect. Recommendations for Day 1 dinner:
- Kilimanjaro Coffee Lounge: the best coffee in Moshi and a good light dinner menu. The rooftop terrace has Kilimanjaro views on clear evenings.
- Indoitaliano Restaurant: popular with expats and tourists — reliable pizza, pasta, and Tanzanian dishes in a pleasant outdoor setting.
- Mama Lisa’s: the most authentic Tanzanian food in Moshi — ugali, meat stew, pilau rice. Very affordable and genuinely local.
Evening tip: hydration and sleep
The single most important thing you can do on your arrival day is drink 2–3 litres of water and get 8+ hours of sleep. Both significantly reduce jet lag and prepare your body for the altitude ahead. Avoid alcohol on arrival night — even at Moshi’s modest elevation, alcohol impairs sleep quality and dehydrates.
Day 2: Materuni Waterfalls and Chagga coffee tour (full day)
Day 2 is the centrepiece of the Moshi pre-climb itinerary. The Materuni Waterfalls and Chagga coffee tour is Moshi’s finest day trip — a full day that combines a forest hike on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, a swim in a 90-metre waterfall, an authentic bean-to-cup coffee experience at a Chagga family farm, and a home-cooked local lunch. It also provides the best gentle acclimatisation walk available near Moshi — the trail reaches approximately 1,800–2,000 metres elevation on the lower mountain, meaningfully higher than the town.
Your Serac Adventure guide picks you up from the hotel at 8:00–8:30am. You return to Moshi by approximately 4:00–5:00pm. The day is physically manageable — a 3–4km forest hike — but provides just enough exertion to promote deep sleep that night.
| 8:00am | Hotel pickup | Serac Adventure guide collects you from your Moshi hotel |
| 9:00am | Arrive Materuni | Register at village office and begin forest hike |
| 10:15am | Waterfall | Arrive at Materuni Falls (90m) — swimming time |
| 12:00pm | Return hike | Walk back to the village with guide commentary |
| 1:00pm | Chagga lunch | Traditional home-cooked meal at a local family home |
| 2:00pm | Coffee experience | Bean-to-cup: pulping, roasting, grinding, tasting |
| 3:30pm | Drive back | Return journey to Moshi |
| 4:30pm | Hotel | Back at your hotel |
Evening of Day 2
The evening after Materuni is ideally kept very relaxed — a quiet dinner, final gear check for the climb, and an early night. Many climbers depart for Kilimanjaro early the following morning.
Day 3: Chemka Hot Springs — the recovery and relaxation day
If you have a third day in Moshi before your Kilimanjaro climb departs, the Chemka Hot Springs (Kikuletwa) is the ideal activity. This half-day trip takes you 90 minutes from Moshi to a geothermal oasis — warm, crystal-clear turquoise water in the middle of the Maasai steppe — where you do nothing except swim, float, and relax.
The warm water at Chemka has an almost therapeutic effect on the body after long travel and the gentle exertion of the Materuni hike. It is the optimal pre-climb day: physically restful, mentally calming, and extraordinarily beautiful.
| 8:30am | Hotel pickup | Drive to Chemka (approximately 90 minutes) |
| 10:00am | Arrive Chemka | Swimming, floating, relaxing in the warm springs |
| 1:00pm | Packed lunch | Lunch at the spring side |
| 2:00pm | Return drive | 90 minutes back to Moshi |
| 3:30pm | Hotel | Return, final packing for Kilimanjaro |
Afternoon of Day 3: final Kilimanjaro preparation
The afternoon before a Kilimanjaro climb departure is the most important preparation window. Use it for:
- Gear check at Serac Adventure office: our guides go through your equipment item by item. This is included in all Kilimanjaro packages and takes approximately 1 hour.
- Final shopping: any missing items — snacks, sunscreen, batteries, blister plasters — can be bought at the gear shops on Moshi’s main street.
- Weight check on your duffel bag: must not exceed 15kg including the bag itself. Weigh it now, not at the gate.
- Large meal and extra hydration: eat a substantial dinner with extra carbohydrates. Drink extra water throughout the afternoon and evening.
- Early sleep: the first day on Kilimanjaro typically departs 7:00–8:00am. An early night is more valuable than any last-minute research.
Alternative Day 3 option: Maasai village or Arusha National Park
If you prefer an active Day 3 over a relaxation day, the Maasai village tour (half day, $45pp) or Arusha National Park day safari ($130pp) are both excellent alternatives. The Arusha NP day trip is particularly well-suited to wildlife-focused travellers who want to see some game before their safari or climb officially begins.
