Moshi is far more than a staging post for Kilimanjaro. Day trips and outdoor adventures from Moshi
1. Materuni Waterfalls and Chagga coffee tour
Duration: Full day (7–8 hours) Price from: From $55 per person
The most popular day trip from Moshi and justifiably so. A scenic drive to the Materuni village on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro is followed by a guided walk through Chagga coffee and banana farms, a coffee bean-to-cup demonstration by local farmers, and a hike through the forest to the stunning Materuni Waterfall — one of the tallest and most beautiful waterfalls on Kilimanjaro. Swim in the cool pool beneath the falls, enjoy a home-cooked Chagga lunch at a local family home, and leave with a bag of freshly roasted Tanzanian coffee. A perfect day that combines nature, culture, food, and genuine local connection.
2. Chemka Hot Springs (Maji Moto)
Duration: Full day (7–8 hours including travel) Price from: From $60 per person
One of Tanzania’s most enchanting hidden secrets. The Chemka Hot Springs — known locally as Maji Moto (“hot water”) — are a series of crystal-clear natural thermal pools set deep within a palm and fig tree forest about 1.5 hours from Moshi. Fed by underground geothermal springs, the turquoise water is warm and extraordinarily clear — you can see the spring bubbling from the sandy floor beneath you. Kingfishers dart overhead, colobus monkeys crash through the canopy, and the forest silence is punctuated only by birdsong. Many visitors describe Chemka as the most magical experience of their entire Tanzania trip. Swimming, floating, and simply being present in this extraordinary place is the agenda.
3. Kilimanjaro day hike (Marangu Route to Mandara Hut)
Duration: Full day (6–7 hours) Price from: From $120 per person (includes park fees)
Want to experience Kilimanjaro National Park without a full multi-day climb? This guided day hike takes you inside the park via the Marangu Route gate and ascends through the beautiful montane rainforest to Mandara Hut at 2,720m — the first overnight camp on the full climb. You walk through ancient forest draped in moss and lichen, spot colobus monkeys in the canopy, listen to Kilimanjaro’s remarkable birds, and emerge above the treeline for panoramic views of the mountain and the Kenyan plains beyond. A genuine taste of the mountain without the commitment. Excellent for families and acclimatisation before a full climb.
4. Maasai village cultural experience
Duration: Half day or full day Price from: From $45 per person
One of East Africa’s most recognisable peoples, the Maasai maintain a traditional semi-nomadic herding culture in the Kilimanjaro region. A guided visit to a Maasai boma (village settlement) near Moshi introduces you to Maasai warriors, elders, and families — through traditional dances, jumping demonstrations, explanation of herding life, beadwork, and a visit to the local market. The experience is facilitated by Serac Adventure’s local guide team to ensure it is respectful, genuine, and contextually rich rather than performative. An excellent half-day addition for the day before or after your Kilimanjaro climb.
5. Lake Chala — kayaking on a crater lake
Duration: Full day (8 hours including travel) Price from: From $70 per person
Lake Chala is one of Tanzania’s most visually striking natural features — an emerald-green volcanic crater lake sitting on the Tanzania-Kenya border approximately 45 minutes from Moshi. The lake is fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro and has no surface outlet, creating an extraordinary depth and clarity. The Serac Adventure Lake Chala day trip includes a guided hike down the steep crater walls to the lake shore, kayaking on the glassy crater surface, swimming in the clear water, and time to simply absorb the dramatic landscape. The views back up to Kilimanjaro from the crater rim at sunset are exceptional.
6. Arusha National Park day safari
Duration: Full day (9 hours including travel) Price from: From $130 per person (includes park fees)
For travellers who want to see Tanzania wildlife without committing to a multi-day safari, the Arusha National Park day trip delivers an outstanding introduction. Located 90 minutes from Moshi and 45 minutes from Arusha, this compact but diverse park offers game drives with giraffe, zebra, buffalo, warthog, colobus monkey, and flamingo-dotted Momela Lakes — all against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak. Canoeing on the lakes is also available and offers a unique wildlife encounter from the water. One of the best-value wildlife experiences near Moshi.
7. Moshi town walking tour
Duration: Half day (3–4 hours) Price from: From $25 per person
Moshi is a genuine, working Tanzanian town with a character and pace entirely its own. A guided walking tour reveals the old town market, the famous Moshi clock tower, local food stalls where you can try mishkaki (grilled meat), samosas, and freshly squeezed sugar cane juice, the colourful covered market where local farmers sell produce, and the historical areas near the railway station. An excellent orientation activity for the first afternoon in Moshi — and a chance to meet local people and begin to understand the town and culture you are visiting.
8. Coffee plantation tour (Moshi area)
Duration: Half day (3–4 hours) Price from: From $30 per person
The Kilimanjaro region is one of Tanzania’s most important coffee-producing areas. The volcanic soils and elevation create ideal growing conditions for Arabica coffee that is exported worldwide. A guided coffee plantation tour on the outskirts of Moshi takes you through the full coffee journey — from the growing plant and harvesting of the red coffee cherries, through pulping, fermentation, washing, drying, roasting, and finally grinding and brewing the finished cup. Most tours end with a tasting session of freshly roasted local coffee in the family home of the farming family.
