Tanzania is a year-round safari destination — one of its great strengths compared to more seasonally restricted parks in southern Africa. The northern circuit parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara) can be visited in every month of the year and deliver outstanding wildlife encounters regardless of season. But the timing of your visit profoundly affects what you see, how crowded the parks are, what you pay, and which specific wildlife events you can witness.
This guide gives you the honest, nuanced picture of every month in Tanzania — migration movements, park conditions, weather patterns, crowd levels, and pricing — so you can choose the safari window that perfectly matches your goals.

Understanding Tanzania’s seasons
Tanzania does not follow the four-season calendar familiar to temperate climates. Instead, the year is defined by two rainy seasons and two dry periods, driven by the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone moving north and south across the equator.
| Season | Months | Rainfall | Wildlife impact |
| Long dry season | June–October | None to minimal | Peak game viewing. Wildlife concentrates at water. Migration in north. |
| Short rains | November | Light, intermittent | Park roads passable. Green landscape. Good birding. Quieter. |
| Short dry season | December–March | Mostly dry, some showers | Calving season. Good visibility. Warm and pleasant. |
| Long rains | April–May | Heavy and sustained | Some roads difficult. Lowest prices. Lush scenery. Few visitors. |
The Great Wildebeest Migration — year-round calendar
The Migration is not a single event — it is continuous. Approximately 1.5 million wildebeest move in a perpetual clockwise circuit through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, driven entirely by rainfall and the growth of new grass. Here is where the herds are by month:
| Dec–Jan | Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) | Herds arrive on short-grass plains. Calving begins in Jan. |
| Feb–Mar | Southern Serengeti / Ndutu | Peak calving season. 8,000+ calves born daily. Intense predator action. |
| Apr–May | Central Serengeti | Herds moving north. Long rains. Mating season begins. |
| Jun–Jul | Western Corridor (Grumeti) | Grumeti River crossings. First dramatic crocodile action of the year. |
| Jul–Oct | Northern Serengeti (Mara River) | Iconic Mara River crossings. Peak safari season. |
| Oct–Nov | Eastern Serengeti | Herds beginning journey south as short rains return. |
| Migration timing is never guaranteed The migration calendar shifts by several weeks each year depending on rainfall. What you read in any published guide — including this one — is a general pattern, not a guarantee. Serac Adventure monitors herd movements in real time through our network of guide contacts on the ground. Month-by-month Tanzania safari guide
January — excellent
January is one of the finest safari months in Tanzania and significantly underrated. The short dry season delivers clear skies, warm days, and superb visibility across the plains. The calving season begins in the southern Serengeti — an extraordinary spectacle with wildebeest calves arriving in huge numbers and predators hunting relentlessly. Ngorongoro Crater is excellent. Tarangire remains outstanding from the preceding dry season. Crowds are manageable compared to the July–September peak.
- Migration: calving begins — southern Serengeti / Ndutu
- Weather: warm, mostly dry, clear mornings
- Crowds: moderate — good balance of great conditions and fewer vehicles
- Best for: calving season, predator action, first-time visitors
February — excellent
February is arguably Tanzania’s best safari month for those who know where to go. The calving season is at its absolute peak in the Ndutu area of the southern Serengeti — the concentration of newborns, nursing mothers, circling predators, and dramatic hunts creates the most emotionally intense safari experience in Africa. The weather is warm and clear. Crowds remain lower than peak season. Highly recommended.
- Migration: peak calving — Ndutu / southern Serengeti plains
- Weather: warm and dry, excellent visibility
- Crowds: moderate, building toward end of month
- Best for: calving season, cheetah sightings, extraordinary predator action
March — good (early) to variable (late)
Early March continues the excellent calving season conditions. From mid-March the long rains begin to develop — cloud cover increases and occasional afternoon thunderstorms appear on the southern plains. The herds begin moving north. Still a strong month, particularly in the first two weeks. Game viewing in Ngorongoro remains excellent throughout.
- Migration: herds beginning to move north from Ndutu
- Weather: good early, increasingly cloudy and wet late March
- Crowds: lower — good value
April and May — green season (avoid for first-timers, love for budget travellers)
The long rains bring the most challenging conditions of the year. Sustained heavy rainfall makes some northern circuit roads difficult and occasionally impassable. Visibility in the rainforest zones is reduced. However, April–May also delivers a Tanzania that relatively few visitors see: explosively lush green landscapes, waterfalls, wildflowers, and an extraordinary abundance of birdlife as migrants arrive from Europe and the north. Lodges and camps offer their lowest rates of the year — often 30–50% below peak season. Experienced safari travellers who prioritise value and solitude often choose this window deliberately.
- Migration: herds in central and western Serengeti, moving north
- Weather: heavy rains, lush landscape, some road challenges
- Crowds: lowest of the year
- Best for: birding, budget travellers, green season photography
| Green season safari: what to expect honestly Some dirt roads in the parks become muddy and vehicles occasionally get stuck — part of the adventure. Game viewing can be harder as animals disperse across the lush landscape rather than concentrating at water. However: predator activity is high around the newly born young of resident species. Accommodation prices are genuinely much lower — a real opportunity for budget safari travellers. June — very good
June marks the beginning of the peak dry season and is an excellent month. The rains have stopped, roads are drying out and firms up, and wildlife begins concentrating around remaining water sources. The Migration herds are moving through the western corridor toward the Grumeti River — the first dramatic river crossings of the season. Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara are all in excellent condition. Crowds are building but not yet at their peak.
- Migration: Grumeti River crossings beginning
- Weather: dry, clear skies, comfortable temperatures
- Crowds: building but manageable
- Best for: the beginning of peak season without the August rush
July and August — peak season (best conditions, most crowded)
July and August are the most popular months for Tanzania safaris — and justifiably so. Conditions are at their best across all northern circuit parks. The Migration river crossings are occurring in the northern Serengeti. Wildlife concentrates at water sources. Visibility is outstanding. The downside is clear: this is peak season and parks are busy, particularly the Mara River area. Book accommodation and safaris 6+ months in advance.
- Migration: Mara River crossings — peak season for northern Serengeti
- Weather: dry, warm days, cool evenings. Best visibility of the year
- Crowds: peak — busiest period, especially at Mara River crossing points
- Best for: river crossings, optimal wildlife viewing, reliable conditions
September — excellent
September is one of the finest months for a Tanzania safari and increasingly popular as travellers discover it as an alternative to the August peak. The Migration is still in the northern Serengeti. Dry season conditions are sustained. Crowds begin dropping from the August high. Tarangire is extraordinary in September with huge elephant herds around the Tarangire River. An ideal month across all parks.
- Migration: Mara River crossings continuing, herds beginning to turn south
- Weather: dry and clear, slightly cooler than August
- Crowds: high but lower than August
- Best for: river crossings, Tarangire elephants, overall northern circuit
October — very good
October is transitional but excellent. The Migration begins moving south and east as the short rains approach the Serengeti. Wildlife viewing remains outstanding throughout the park system. Tarangire is superb. Ngorongoro is excellent year-round. The short rains begin late in the month — first at low altitudes, with higher ground remaining dry. Crowds drop noticeably from the September level and prices begin to moderate.
- Migration: herds moving south and east through the Serengeti
- Weather: mostly dry, light showers possible late in the month
- Crowds: dropping — good balance of conditions and availability
- Best for: Tarangire, general wildlife, fewer crowds
November — variable but underrated
The short rains return in November, bringing intermittent showers particularly in the afternoons. The landscape greens rapidly. Bird species diversity explodes as migrants arrive. The Migration herds are heading south back toward Ndutu, completing the circuit. Visitor numbers drop to near their lowest levels and lodge prices fall significantly. Experienced safari-goers who prioritise solitude and lush scenery over guaranteed clear skies often choose November deliberately.
- Migration: herds returning south toward Ndutu
- Weather: intermittent short rains, rapidly greening landscape
- Crowds: very low
- Best for: birding, green season photography, budget travel, solitude
December — improving and excellent value
December sees the short rains fade and conditions steadily improve through the month. By mid-December the southern Serengeti is welcoming the returning herds for the next cycle. Game viewing is good and improving. Christmas and New Year bring a modest spike in visitors but overall it remains quiet. Excellent value — rates are below peak season and conditions from mid-December are genuinely strong.
- Migration: herds arriving in southern Serengeti / Ndutu
- Weather: improving significantly from mid-month
- Crowds: low to moderate with Christmas spike
- Best for: budget-conscious travellers, calving season preview
Tanzania safari by park — when to visit each

Which month is right for you?
You want the Mara River crossings → July to October
The northern Serengeti Mara River crossings are the Migration’s most famous and dramatic event. For the best chance of witnessing a crossing, plan for July–September in the northern Serengeti near Kogatende. Be prepared to wait — crossings are unpredictable. October is also possible as herds begin moving south.
You want the calving season → January and February
The Ndutu calving season is one of Africa’s greatest and most underrated wildlife events. Arrive in mid-January for the buildup and February for the absolute peak. Stay in the southern Serengeti / Ndutu area. Predator activity is extraordinary. Fewer visitors than peak season.
You want the best game viewing with fewer crowds → September and October
September delivers peak season wildlife conditions with noticeably fewer safari vehicles than August. October combines excellent game viewing with significantly reduced crowds and beginning price drops. Both are outstanding months for a first Tanzania safari.
You want the lowest prices → April and November
April–May and November are Tanzania’s quietest months with the lowest accommodation prices — often 30–50% below peak. April–May involves rain and occasional road challenges. November is lighter with shorter, intermittent showers. Both offer genuine value for travellers flexible on conditions.
You want to combine with Kilimanjaro → January–March or June–October
Both Tanzania dry seasons align perfectly with the best Kilimanjaro climbing windows. January–March allows a Kilimanjaro climb followed by calving season safari. June–October delivers Kilimanjaro in peak climbing season followed by the best general game viewing and Migration crossings. See our Kilimanjaro and safari combo guide for sample itineraries.
