Tour Overview

The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular ways to climb Kilimanjaro. It takes trekkers through beautiful rainforest and moorland landscapes before reaching the higher alpine zones. The 6-day itinerary offers a good pace, helping climbers gradually adjust to higher altitudes while spending nights in comfortable huts along the trail.

While the route can be done in 5 or 6 days, we recommend the 6-day plan. It provides enough time for proper acclimatization and allows trekkers to climb at a steady, manageable pace. This balance makes the Marangu Route a favorite for those looking for a comfortable and achievable path to the summit.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Elevation: 1,870 m (6,135 ft) to 2,700 m (8,858 ft)
  • Distance: ~8 km (5 miles)
  • Duration: 4–5 hours

Hit the ground running at Marangu Gate, your launchpad to Kilimanjaro glory! After a quick check-in with your Discount Treks crew, you’ll dive into the lush rainforest, buzzing with wildlife and dripping with green vibes. The 4-5 hour trek to Mandara Hut at 2,700 meters is a gentle warm-up—think towering trees, monkey chatter, and a cozy hut waiting to welcome you for your first mountain night.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 2,700 m (8,858 ft) to 3,720 m (12,205 ft)
  • Distance: ~12 km (7.5 miles)
  • Duration: 6–8 hours

Day two turns up the heat as you trek from Mandara Hut through the fading forest into the heather-clad moorland zone. This 6-8 hour haul dishes out sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes, with the air getting crisper as you climb. You’ll roll into Horombo Hut at 3,720 meters, a perfect perch to rest, refuel, and let the mountain magic sink in.

Day 3: Horombo Hut – Acclimatization Day

  • Elevation: 3,720 m (12,205 ft) – no significant change
  • Distance: Optional hike (~4-6 km / 2.5-3.7 miles round trip)
  • Duration: Rest day, optional 2–3 hours trekking

Take a break at Horombo Hut—this acclimatization day is your summit superpower! Kick back at 3,720 meters, soaking in the views, or tag along with me for an optional jaunt to Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Hut. It’s a chill 2-3 hour stretch to keep your legs loose and your lungs ready, setting you up to crush the climb ahead.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 3,720 m (12,205 ft) to 4,703 m (15,430 ft)
  • Distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Duration: 5–7 hours

Strap in for a wild shift as you leave Horombo Hut and trek into the stark alpine desert, where the landscape morphs into a rocky moonscape. This 5-7 hour push to Kibo Hut at 4,703 meters feels like stepping into another world, with the summit teasing you in the distance. Crash early at the hut—tomorrow’s the big one, and you’ll need all the juice you can muster.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,703 m (15,430 ft) to 5,895 m (19,341 ft) to 3,720 m (12,205 ft)
  • Distance: ~6 km (3.7 miles) to summit, ~15 km (9.3 miles) down to Horombo Hut
  • Duration: 12–15 hours (6–8 hours ascent, 6–7 hours descent)

It’s summit showdown time! Kick off at midnight from Kibo Hut, grinding up steep scree in the dark for 6-8 hours to hit Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters—Africa’s rooftop—just as the sun cracks the sky. After epic pics and a victory yell, descend back to Kibo for a quick breather, then keep dropping to Horombo Hut at 3,720 meters. This 12-15 hour epic’s a beast, but the high is unbeatable!

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Elevation: 3,720 m (12,205 ft) to 1,870 m (6,135 ft)
  • Distance: ~20 km (12.4 miles)
  • Duration: 5–7 hours

Your final day’s a victory march, descending from Horombo Hut through moorland and back into the rainforest’s green embrace. The 5-7 hour trek to Marangu Gate at 1,870 meters is a sweet cooldown—time to swap summit stories and feel the pride sink in. Grab your certificate at the gate, hop a ride back to Moshi, and get ready to brag—you’ve just conquered Kilimanjaro, Marangu-style!

Questions & Answers

Who are your operators in Tanzania?

We are. We are not agents for anybody, but run the treks ourselves through our own Tanzanian company. So you can rest assured that whoever you speak to in our company has climbed Kilimanjaro, and probably many times.

What kind of food will I eat on Kilimanjaro?

Highly-trained chefs prepare three hot nutritious meals daily, as well as trail snacks and afternoon tea each day. You’ll eat all your meals in a solar-lit dining tent with your fellow trekkers and head guide. Delicious vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other specialty meals can be provided (with advance request). We’re happy to send you a sample menu—just ask!

What kind of hiking experience do I need?

None, but previous hiking or climbing experience will help. You need to be fit and healthy and have a good pair of worn-in hiking boots. The fitter you are the more you are likely to enjoy it.

What if I have special dietary requirements?

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, celiac, lactose-free, or if you have any allergies, just give us a heads up and you will be catered to.

What are the accommodations like on Mount Kilimanjaro?

Accommodation on Mount Kilimanjaro is comfortable and well-supported. Our experienced camp porters set up and break down camp daily. You’ll stay in spacious, all-weather tents on a double-occupancy basis, using three-person tents for extra space, complete with ground pads to keep you warm and dry. Each camp includes private toilet tents, solar-lit dining tents with tables and chairs, and warm water for washing. On the Marangu Route, accommodation is in mountain huts or cabins instead of tents.

I would like to book but I have group is large group, is this a problem?

We aim to keep the size of the public groups to a minimum, as we feel that a group that is much larger than ten trekkers is cumbersome and trekkers lose the sense that they are in a wilderness if there are too many people. That said, if you are a single, private group, then there is no problem accommodating you whatever the size of the group, as, of course, you will be aware before arriving in Tanzania of the number of people you will be trekking with.

How many hours will I trek each day?

On most routes, you’ll trek 4-7 hours most days. On certain routes you’ll trek as many as 10-15 hours on the longest days.

How long is the Kilimanjaro hike?

There are at least six routes to the top, of Uhuru peak. You will hike between 53 and 73km depending on which route you choose. The shortest and toughest is the 5-day Umbwe route. Allowing extra days will help you to acclimatize better and improve your chances of reaching the summit. The easiest and most popular route is Marangu (which can be done in five), but we use six days for this route.

How high is Kilimanjaro?

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world and the highest mountain in Africa. Its highest point is Uhuru Peak on the Kibo crater at 5895m above sea level.

Do You Offer Private and Fully Customizable Climbs For Kilimanjaro

Your Kilimanjaro dream climb is entirely your own to design. We will work with you to customize exactly the triumphant Tanzanian mountainous quest experience you want. You go with the people you choose. You leave on whatever day you wish. You decide on your preferred route option, pace, and the number of days you will take.

When is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed anytime throughout the year. Most travelers prefer climbing during the dry seasons: December to March, June to October. Many consider the best months to climb Kilimanjaro to be January, February, and September.

Do we tip the Kilimanjaro hiking crew?

Yes. Tipping is customary and greatly appreciated. The recommended amount typically ranges from USD 150–450 per hiker, depending on the number of trekking days and group size. Tips are pooled and fairly shared among the entire crew. Please bring US dollar bills.

Are there charging stations on Mount Kilimanjaro?

There are no charging stations on Mount Kilimanjaro. We recommend bringing Power Banks and spare batteries.

What travel documents do I need?

You will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your dates of travel with an entry or re-entry visa, duly endorsed.
