Trekking: Overview

Tanzania has various terrains and a good collection of peaks, hill and mountain ranges. Landscapes range from the forested slopes to volcanic cliffs. Throughout Mountain Trekking can be done without any technical equipment and it can be done by anyone who has maintained good physical fitness. The most of the trekking and hiking take place in National parks and wildlife areas. The Mountain Trekking needs to be done with a professional and experienced guide. The guide or ranger will be completely armed as the trekking will happened mostly in the wildlife area.

The treks are accompanied by guides and porters for Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru The best time for trekking is during the dry warmer season, that is from mid December to February and the dry, cooler season from June to October. You will need to get a full range of waterproof cold weather clothing and gear. In Tanzania mountain areas expect rain at any time of the year and considerably cooler weather than along the coast.

The most famous trekking areas in Tanzania are Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. However, there are few other places too; Mount Hanang, Crater Islands and Ngorongoro conservation area, Usambara mountains and others. Take minimal packaging and reusable containers or stuff snacks. Stick to existing trails and avoid shortcuts.
